- Psalm 142:5
What does it mean that God is our portion?
When the Hebrews writers used the term portion, they meant inheritance.
And not just a physical inheritance, but a spiritual one.
There is deep theological meaning in the word portion.
The Israelites came to learn that God Himself was their portion— He is the people's inheritance (Jeremiah 10:16).
The same is true in the New Testament - the concept of inheritance means being connected with the person and work of Christ.
Christ is God the Son, heir to all that is God's (Mark 12:7; Hebrews 1:2).
And through Christ's redemptive work, believers are adopted by God and fellow-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17; Galatians 4:7).
In Christ, God becomes your portion, a portion that is given to all believers, both Jews and Gentiles (Ephesians 3:6).
When a biblical writer says, "God is my portion," he means that God is the source of his being, his happiness, his blessing.
It means that he is content with all that the Lord is and all that the Lord provides.
It means that he has the best inheritance imaginable and does not seek any possession or comfort outside of God.
Riches, honor, friends, and fame—nothing is as valuable as the promises of God.
My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever (Psalm 73).
If God is our portion, you need nothing else!
Your prayer today, "God help me see you as my portion. Help me to see that you are the most valuable thing in my life."
Press on,
Pastor Chris
