Daily Devotional • Colossians 1:7

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  - Colossians 1:7

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

- Colossians 1:17

God is infinite, self-existing, and without origin. He has always existed.

For me, this is the hardest concept to grasp about God.

I heard an illustration that said, “Trying to grasp the nature of our limitless God is like holding onto water as it rages down a river.”

A.W. Tozer says in relation to God’s infinity that, “To admit that there is One who lies beyond us, who exists outside of all our categories, who will not be dismissed with a name, who will not appear before the bar of our reason, nor submit to our curious inquiries; this requires a great deal of humility, more than most of us possess, so we save face by thinking God down to our level, or at least down to where we can manage Him.”

So, as I thought about who God is, it made me also think of who we are in Him.

For example, Genesis 1:1 teaches that God is Elohim, the strong One.

And in Him, 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here. Therefore, we are new creations in Christ.

In Exodus 4:10,13, we learn another of God’s names, Adonai- which indicates first his title as Master or Lord, a name too sacred to be uttered.

Yet, even though He is sacred, we are chosen, holy, and dearly loved in Him.

Colossians 3:12 says, Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

The Bible is filled with the names of God, which describe His character! He is able to do above and beyond all we ask or imagine. He is trustworthy!

Prayer: Dear Jesus, even though I cannot grasp the limitlessness of your incredible attributes, help me to rest in my trust of You. Amen.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
