Daily Devotional • Genesis 39:12 • When Running Is the Right Choice

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is run. Genesis 39:12 reminds us that strength isn’t always standing your ground—it’s knowing when to walk away.

She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.

Genesis 39:12

Joseph's refusal of Potiphar's wife shows all of us, men and women alike, how to fight temptation.

  1. Live Coram Deo, that is, live your life in the presence of God, under the authority of God, for the glory of God.

  2. Avoid the occasions of sin. Joseph not only avoided lying in bed with her, but he also refused to be in the same room with her (vs. 10).

  3. When fighting sin, start on the offensive, not defensive. Hit first and hit hard; don't bring a knife to a gunfight, bring a gun. Fight the weapons of this world with the Word of God.

  4. Be a person of conviction. Joseph did not run because he was afraid, he ran because he was holy. Because he feared God and loved his fellow man.

You want to fight temptation; do you want to kill sin?

Live as if God is watching (because He is).

Fight sin head-on, and remember, the best offense is often absence.

Joseph didn’t hesitate—he ran. He chose obedience over appearance, integrity over comfort, and God over temptation. That kind of decision doesn’t just happen; it comes from a heart anchored in truth.

Before you move on, take a moment to reflect. Where in your life might God be calling you not to fight harder—but to step away? Use the prompts below in your journaling today:

• Where in my life am I being tempted to stay when I should leave?

• What does “running” look like for me in this season—physically, emotionally, or spiritually?

• Am I more concerned with how things look or with honoring God?

• What practical boundary can I set today to protect my integrity?

• How has God been faithful to me in past moments of obedience?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Joseph run instead of staying to resist temptation?
Joseph understood that proximity can weaken resolve. Removing himself entirely was the wisest and most obedient choice.

Is avoiding temptation a sign of weakness?
No—it's a sign of wisdom. Choosing distance over danger shows spiritual maturity, not fear.

What does “running” from temptation look like today?
It might mean setting boundaries, ending unhealthy relationships, avoiding certain environments, or changing habits that lead you away from God.

How can I build strength to resist temptation like Joseph?
Through consistent prayer, staying in God’s Word, accountability, and making decisions ahead of time about what you will and won’t tolerate.

What if running costs me something important?
Joseph lost his cloak—and his reputation temporarily—but kept his integrity. God honors obedience, even when it comes with a cost.

Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to walk away when I need to. Help me to recognize temptation quickly and respond with wisdom, not hesitation. Strengthen my heart so I choose integrity over approval and obedience over comfort. Even when it costs me something, remind me that You are worth it. Lead me in paths that honor You. Amen.
