Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.  - Genesis 40:23
Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Genesis 40:23

Joseph had done everything right.

In prison, yet running the prison, God's favor followed Joseph wherever he went.

When two of his fellow inmates need their dreams interpreted, God gives Joseph insight.

Interpreting both dreams, Joseph tells Pharaoh’s cupbearer, one of the two inmates, that when Pharaoh restores you, "remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house" (vs. 14).

The interpretation proves true; the cupbearer is restored to Pharaoh’s court.

And Joseph... Joseph is forgotten, "Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him" (vs. 23).

For two more years, Joseph sits in prison. Joseph was forgotten; he was overlooked.

But, Joseph was handpicked by God.

Overlooked by everyone else, Joseph was handpicked by God.

In this way, you, I, and Joseph are a lot alike.

John 15:16 says, "You did not choose me, but I [Jesus] chose you and appointed you..."

Ephesians 2:10 says, "we are his [Gods] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

Psalm 139:14 declares that you and I are "fearfully and wonderfully made."

Perhaps you woke up today feeling forgotten, feeling overlooked.

Take heart, overlooked by everyone else, you were handpicked by God!

This should shape how you go about your day.

Nothing you do is ordinary. Nothing you do is inconsequential.

Instead, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23).

You are chosen by God for the work of God, no matter what that work is. Overlooked by everyone else, you were handpicked by God— go and live like it!

Fight on,
Pastor Chris
