Hebrews 12:11 Devotional: Growing Through God’s Discipline

Growth isn’t always comfortable. This devotional on Hebrews 12:11 explores how God uses discipline to produce righteousness, peace, and lasting spiritual maturity.

No discipline seems pleasant at the time but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace in you, who has been trained by it.

- Hebrews 12:11

Have you ever watched a toddler feed themselves? They grasp their food with their tiny, chubby hands and fumble to get it in their mouth. Other times they will intentionally drop a fistful of food to the ground, watching it fall, only to look at their parents and babble, “uh oh.”

As parents, we have daily opportunities to instruct our children. Some directions are to protect them, others to help them grow up healthy and whole. Likewise, God wants what is best for us. He wants to mature us to grow up to be more like Him.

However, we sometimes repeat the same sins over and over again. We know when we drop that piece of food, it will hit the ground per se. We look at the things in our lives that we have dropped, failed at, or just thrown away and look to God mumbling, “Uh oh.” But God looks at us lovingly through the eyes of Christ’s sacrifice. He offers forgiveness and instruction. He sets our feet upon solid ground.

Today, ask your loving Father to guide you and help you grow strong in Him. You can rely on Him to come through on your behalf.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd

What current situation feels uncomfortable or stretching?

Could this season be shaping something in me?

What character trait might God be refining right now?

Where am I resisting growth?

What would it look like to trust God’s process instead of rushing it?

Growth is rarely instant. Writing through difficult seasons can help you see how God is producing fruit even when the process feels hard.
