Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
- Mark 12:30
Why would God tell us to love Him with all our heart, mind and strength when He knows that it is an impossible task for us?
Try as we may, our sinful natures and inadequacies cause us to fail God.
That is why we so desperately need Jesus! God knows our limitations.
He knows when we stumble and fall. He knows when we are completely defeated and when the smallest tear drops.
So, if God knows we are sinful and failing, why would He tell us to love Him with everything we have?
He wants a relationship with us and He wants us to acknowledge our need for a Savior.
With the forgiveness of sin through Christ and the Holy Spirit living within us, we know that “all things are possible for one who believes.” (Mark 9:23)
As we draw close to Him, He draws close to us and enables us to succeed against sin because of His power in us.
Is there an area of your life that God is asking you to surrender to Him today? Ask Him to show you where you can love Him more completely.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Mark 12:30 mean?
Jesus teaches that the greatest commandment is to love God with every part of who we are—our emotions (heart), our inner being (soul), our thoughts (mind), and our actions (strength).
Why is this commandment so important?
It centers our entire life around God. When we love Him fully, everything else—our decisions, relationships, and purpose—flows from that foundation.
How can I love God with my mind?
By learning, reflecting on scripture, asking questions, and intentionally focusing your thoughts on truth.
What if I feel like I fall short?
Loving God fully is a daily pursuit, not a one-time achievement. Growth happens over time through grace and consistency.
Prayer
Lord, Teach me what it truly means to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Show me where I’ve held back, and gently lead me into deeper devotion. Let my thoughts, actions, and desires reflect a life centered on You. Help me not just say I love You—but to live it out in every part of my life. Amen.
Message from Kara Heckel, founder of Paper Sunday
This verse always brings me back to the simplicity and depth of faith. It’s easy to overcomplicate things, but at the core, we’re called to love God with everything we have. I’ve had seasons where my focus was divided, and this reminder helped me gently come back to what matters most. Wherever you are today, you don’t have to have it all figured out—just take one step toward loving Him more fully.
