Matthew 11:28–30 Devotional: Finding Rest for Your Soul

Feeling overwhelmed? This devotional on Matthew 11:28–30 invites you to find rest for your soul through relationship with Jesus.

Come to Me all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

- Matthew 11:28-30

It isn’t the load that breaks you, it is how you carry it.

That’s the goal in transition and in life- it is all about how you carry it!

How you manage your transitions and goals is key to its’ success or failure. Transitions do not have to be negative. We can do our best to transition well, to keep our head up and work hard- but if our perspective on the situation begins with negativity, we are already doing ourselves a disservice.

Life can be hectic and harried. There may be painful days, difficult seasons, or confusing outcomes- but our God is steady, unchanging, unwavering, and firm.

It is His peace that comforts us (Romans 8:28) I don’t know about you friend- but recently my faith has been tested and my mind had to take a true step back and refocus.

It is easy to get caught up in only seeing the problems in our circumstances rather than trusting that God is at work behind the scenes. If we knew all the things He was working out for our good, maybe we would appreciate it more!

Today- reflect on your priorities in your times of transition. What is it that needs your attention? How can your focus help to shift your sights?

Let’s pray:
‘Father when I lose sight of you and my priorities get caught up on worldly views, help me to reassess and redesign my mind. I am searching for you in all things and making every thought and priority obedient to your will in this moment in time. I can accomplish so much with you by my side, keeping my eyes fixed on you.’

Reflect: What are my priorities in this time of transition? How can I transition well? Where can I delegate the work to others to better carry the weight of it all?

With Love,
Audri Marie

Deeper Dive into Scripture

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV)

Jesus speaks these words to people who are exhausted.

Not just physically — spiritually.

The religious system of the time had layered obligation upon obligation. Rules. Expectations. Performance. Pressure.

Into that environment, Jesus does not say:

Try harder.
Do more.
Prove yourself.

He says:

Come to Me.

This is an invitation, not an instruction manual.

Rest is not found in achievement.
It is found in relationship.

And the rest He offers is not surface calm — it is rest for your soul.

What This Means Theologically

Jesus invites the weary to exchange burdens.

“Take My yoke upon you.”

A yoke was a wooden beam placed over oxen to guide their movement. It symbolized submission and direction.

At first glance, this sounds heavier:

You are tired — and He offers a yoke?

But notice the difference.

The burden you carry alone crushes.

The yoke you share with Christ aligns.

His yoke is easy because it is shared.

His burden is light because it is relational.

The call is not to inactivity.

It is to partnership.

When You Feel Spiritually Tired

Soul weariness can look like:

Constant striving

Trying to please everyone

Fear of disappointing God

Spiritual dryness

Overcommitment

Carrying emotional weight alone

You may look productive outwardly — but feel depleted inwardly.

Jesus addresses that inner exhaustion.

“Learn from Me.”

Rest is not just relief.

It is learning His pace.

Gentle.
Lowly.
Steady.

Rest grows when you walk closely with Him, not when you run ahead of Him.

Step 1: Identify the Burden

Write honestly:

What feels heavy right now?

Where am I striving excessively?

Am I trying to earn approval?

What expectations exhaust me?

Do I truly believe Jesus offers rest?

Awareness reveals where you need exchange.

Step 2: Accept the Invitation

Write:

“Jesus, I am coming to You.”

Name the burden beneath it.

Imagine handing it over.

Rest begins with surrender.

Step 3: Learn His Pace

Write:

“What would it look like to move at Your pace?”

Consider:

Saying no to one unnecessary commitment

Pausing before reacting

Choosing prayer before productivity

Reducing spiritual performance pressure

Learning from Him builds intimacy.

Step 4: Rewrite the Promise Personally

Write:

“I will find rest for my soul because I walk with You.”

Repeat it slowly.

Soul rest grows through repetition and trust.

Step 5: Practice Shared Living

Throughout the day, ask:

“Am I carrying this alone?”

If the answer is yes, pause and pray.

Partnership produces peace.

How This Builds Your Personal Relationship with God

Many believers relate to God as supervisor rather than Savior.

They perform.
They measure.
They strive.

But Jesus describes Himself as gentle and lowly in heart.

That is relational language.

When you believe He is gentle:

You approach Him more freely.
You confess more honestly.
You depend more deeply.

Rest grows when trust replaces performance.

And trust strengthens intimacy.

Rest is not laziness.

It is secure relationship.
