“a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim [His] excellencies...”
- 1 Peter 2:9
You are not your job. You are not your past. You are not your degree. In Christ you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim [His] excellencies...” (1 Peter 2:9).
Most professing Christians are suffering an identity crisis. They do not know who they are.
Do you know who you are?
You are “a chosen race.” You are the Israel of God, His covenant people. God has made a promise to you; He will never leave you or forsake you, you are His, and He is yours, forever.
You are “a royal priesthood.” As a priest, you have direct access and fellowship with God. Because of Jesus' work, you can go before and talk to God, much like the priests of old. And you are not just any priest; you are a royal priest called to expand the Kingdom of God and influence the world like a king.
You are “holy.” Not perfect, but holy. In Christ, you desire to be blameless before God. Your life is marked by confession and repentance as you fight sin and strive to obey the King. You no longer willfully sin, but when you do sin, and you will, you are sinning against your new will.
You are “His possession.” You belong to God. He owns you. You are His doulos, His slave. He purchased you (1 Cor. 6:20), and now you are ready and willing to do His will.
This is your identity. Your political party does not define you. Your social values do not define you. Your fraternity, spouse, neighborhood, or country are not your identity. In Christ you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim [His] excellencies...” (1 Peter 2:9).
