If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, ...For even sinners do the same.

- Luke 6:32

In this Luke 6 verse, “benefit” means fruit or growth.

He warns us there is no growth or spiritual benefit to blessing people when it is easy!

God is not impressed when we’re good to people who treat us well.

He is impressed when we’re good to people who have not been good to us.

He said even a sinner can be kind to someone who makes them feel good. We are creatures led by emotion praise and affection.

We tend to overlook people who don’t build us up or seek those who may have some benefit to us personally.

  • We may not be thoughtful to someone in the church who doesn’t have position.
  • We may not be helpful to people in the office that can’t offer us advancement.

God says that makes us no different than an unsaved person who does not know him!

Today: God, highlight people to me who are often overlooked. God, let me be kind to that person at the office who has gossiped about me. Let me reach out to that neighbor no one knows. Let me start today in my family by being kind to those who have hurt me.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35

Jesus’ words invite us into a deeper kind of love—one that stretches past comfort and convenience. Before rushing on, take a moment to sit with what this kind of love looks like in your own life. Let’s slow down and reflect together. Journal & Reflect Who is someone in your life that feels easy to love? Why? Who is more difficult for you to love, and what makes it challenging? How might God be inviting you to love someone without expecting anything in return? What fears or hesitations come up when you think about loving this way? What is one small, practical step you can take today to love more like Jesus? Frequently Asked Questions What does Luke 6:32 mean? Luke 6:32 reminds us that loving those who love us is natural, but Jesus calls us to a higher standard—loving others selflessly, even when it’s difficult or undeserved. Why is it hard to love people who don’t love us back? It goes against our instincts for fairness and reciprocity. This kind of love requires humility, grace, and reliance on God’s strength rather than our own. How can I grow in loving others like Jesus? Spend time with God, ask for His help, and take small steps of obedience. Loving others becomes more natural as we stay rooted in His love for us. Does loving others mean allowing harmful behavior? No. Loving like Jesus includes wisdom and healthy boundaries. It means acting with compassion while still honoring truth and safety. Prayer Lord, Thank You for loving me in ways I don’t deserve. You see me fully and still choose grace. Help me to reflect that same love to others—even when it’s hard, uncomfortable, or inconvenient. Teach me to love without expectation, to give without keeping score, and to trust You with the outcome. Shape my heart to look more like Yours each day. Amen. Message from Kara, founder of Paper Sunday If I’m honest, this verse always challenges me. It’s easy to love when it feels mutual—but Jesus calls us beyond that. Luke 6:32 reminds me that real, Christ-like love often shows up in the quiet, unseen choices we make to extend grace anyway. My hope for you today is that you don’t feel pressure to get it perfect—but instead feel invited to take one small step. That’s where transformation begins. You’re not doing this alone.
