A winding road disappearing into the horizon

Daily Devotional • Hebrews 11:8 • Trusting God When the Path Isn’t Clear

Hebrews 11:8 shows us a faith that moves before clarity comes. What would it look like to trust God even when you don’t know where He’s leading?

By faith Abraham, when he was called [by God], obeyed by going to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went, not knowing where he was going.

- Hebrews 11:8

Do you ever feel like Abraham?

You know God is steering you a certain direction, but He won’t give you the specifics.

God isn’t ignoring you if you don’t hear him. He wants you to build your faith.

If you love God and pursue him you will know his heart, his word, and ultimately His will for you.

We don’t decide what we want and hope God is with us. We patiently uncover what He has already decided.

TODAY: God is trustworthy to me and if I love Him in a mature way I become trustworthy to Him.

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

With Love,
Paper Sunday

Abraham didn’t have the full picture—he simply had God’s call, and he chose to obey. That kind of faith can feel uncomfortable, especially when we crave certainty. As you pause and reflect, consider where God might be asking you to trust Him without having all the answers.

Journal & Reflect

  •  Where in your life do you feel uncertain about what’s next? Name the areas where you wish you had more clarity or control.
  • What fears surface when you think about stepping out without knowing the outcome? Be honest about what’s holding you back.
  • How has God proven His faithfulness to you in past seasons of uncertainty? Reflecting on His track record can strengthen your trust today.
  • What is one step of obedience you feel prompted to take right now? Even small steps matter when they’re rooted in faith.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Hebrews 11:8 teach about faith?

It shows that faith often requires action before full understanding—trusting God enough to move even without clear direction.

Why didn’t Abraham wait for more details?

His trust in God’s character outweighed his need for certainty.

How can I trust God when I feel unsure?

Focus on who God is rather than what you can’t see. Faith grows when you rely on His consistency, not your clarity.

Is it normal to feel afraid when stepping out in faith?

Yes. Faith doesn’t eliminate fear—it moves forward despite it.

Prayer

Lord, Help me trust You even when I don’t understand where You’re leading me. Give me the courage to take steps of faith without needing all the answers. When fear rises, remind me of Your faithfulness. Teach me to walk by faith, not by sight, and to follow Your voice with confidence. I place my future in Your hands today. Amen.

Message from Kara Heckel, founder of Paper Sunday

This verse always challenges me in the best way. I naturally want clarity before I move forward—but Hebrews 11:8 reminds me that faith doesn’t work that way. There have been seasons where I’ve felt unsure of what’s ahead, and yet those were often the moments where God was asking for the deepest trust. If you’re in a place of not knowing right now, you’re not alone—and you’re not behind. My prayer is that this devotional encourages you to take that next step, even if it feels small, knowing God is already there ahead of you.
