Have you ever wished you could go back and do something over? Maybe you regret a decision or ignored God’s direction. Perhaps you walked away from something you knew was right, or you made a mess of things and assumed you had blown your chance.

Jonah knew a thing or two about running from God. God told him to go to Nineveh, and Jonah went in the opposite direction. In fact, he ran. He boarded a ship and then ended up in the ocean, in the belly of a fish! I think about that, and it floors me. Because so often we gloss over that like it is just a story. But I recently saw a video of a scuba diver being accidentally swallowed by a whale, which then spit him right back out. It’s horrifying. The man was fine, but it was so frightening.

So imagine being Jonah stuck in the belly of a great fish, for days! It was dark and wet, and I imagine it was smelly. So many times when God directs us, and we ignore Him, we can find ourselves stuck in a dark and unpleasant place.

And yet, Jonah's story didn't end there. After God rescued him, Scripture says something remarkable: "The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time." A second time! Those three words are filled with such hope. God didn't say, "You failed Me, so I'm finished with you." He didn't say, "You had your opportunity, and you’re going to die in the belly of a fish." He came to Jonah again, and He gave him another opportunity to obey.

We sometimes believe our mistakes disqualify us from God's future and the new beginning or purpose He has for us. But it doesn’t. Scripture is filled with people who received second chances. Peter denied Jesus three times, yet Jesus restored him and entrusted him with ministry. Moses killed a man and fled into the wilderness, yet God called him to lead Israel. David committed terrible sins, yet God continued to work through his life. The point isn't that sin doesn't matter. It does. The point is that failure doesn't have to be final when we surrender it to God. Maybe you need a second chance today, or you have been telling yourself it’s too late, you’re too old, you messed up too badly, or you've wandered too far.

But if God can pull Jonah out of a fish to use him, He can redeem your life also. Your story isn't over because you took a wrong turn. God is still writing it. And sometimes the most beautiful chapters begin after the ones we wish we could erase.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that my failures do not have to be the end of my story. Thank You for being the God of second chances. Help me receive Your grace, learn from my mistakes, and step forward when You call me again. Amen.

Help us believe that today.

Give us the humility to learn from where we've been, the courage to rise when You call us forward, and the faith to say yes when You give us another opportunity to obey.

Show us where You are inviting us to begin again.

And when we are tempted to stay stuck in shame, remind us that Your grace is calling us forward.

Help us walk into the purpose You have placed before us—not because we are perfect, but because You are faithful.
