It is written: So now I’ll lie down and sleep like a baby—then I’ll awake in safety, for you surround me with your glory.
- Psalm 3:5
In this psalm, King David was writing about the time when he was fleeing Absalom, his own son!
There were many dark forces out to harm him, so you can imagine David probably felt terrified and sleep did not come easy when night fell.
However, David knew in the depths of his heart that the Lord was His shield.
Despite his fear, David cried out to His father, knowing He would come to His rescue.
Have you ever struggled to sleep at night?
Thankfully, most of us probably haven’t been in the exact situation as David. However, no doubt there have been times where fear has tried to rob us of our rest.
Whenever the enemy tries to steal our peace or we feel overwhelmed by the circumstances of life, we can still sleep like a baby knowing that the Lord is our shield and He covers us with His glory!
When you understand Who you belong to, the Creator and ultimate King of the universe, the fears and ominous circumstances that used to frighten you become laughable.
The enemy knows that if he can rob us of our peace, he can rob us of our sleep too. Do not give in to his lies!
In times where you are fearful and sleep seems impossible, cry out to God! Know today you are covered by His grace and His glory.
He longs for you to have peace, and sleep through the night soundly.
When you awake, you will find yourself safe in the arms of your Father, where He has prepared a feast of favor and bliss!

Deeper Dive into Scripture
“I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.”
— Psalm 3:5 (NKJV)
Context & Meaning: Rest in the Middle of Threat
Psalm 3 was written by David during one of the most painful seasons of his life — when he was fleeing from his own son, Absalom.
This was not mild stress.
It was betrayal.
Public humiliation.
Political collapse.
Personal heartbreak.
And yet David writes:
“I lay down and slept.”
That sentence is extraordinary.
Sleep in Scripture is often a sign of trust. David did not sleep because the situation was safe. He slept because he believed God was sustaining him.
Rest was not rooted in circumstances.
It was rooted in relationship.
“The Lord sustained me.”
David’s confidence was not in security systems, soldiers, or strategies.
It was in God.
What This Means for You
Rest is one of the clearest indicators of trust.
When you cannot sleep, often it is because your mind is rehearsing what you cannot control.
Conversations
Financial concerns
Health fears
Family tension
Future uncertainty
Psalm 3:5 invites you into a different rhythm.
Lay down.
Release control.
Trust that God sustains you.
Peace is not denial of problems.
It is confidence in presence.
And presence builds relationship.
When Rest Feels Impossible
There are seasons when sleep is shallow.
Anxiety replays worst-case scenarios.
Stress creates tension in your body.
Fear magnifies uncertainty.
David does not pretend enemies are gone.
He simply anchors himself in who God is.
“The Lord sustained me.”
Sustaining is ongoing. It is active. It is personal.
God does not merely watch you rest.
He sustains you while you do.
Relationship deepens when you release what you cannot carry.

Open your Personalized Scripture Journal and bring your unrest into conversation with God.
Step 1: Identify What Keeps You Awake
Write honestly:
What thought interrupts my peace?
What situation feels unresolved?
What do I fear losing?
What outcome am I trying to control?
Do I trust God to sustain me through this?
Honesty builds intimacy.
Step 2: Rewrite the Verse Personally
Write:
“I will lay down and rest, because You sustain me.”
Add specifics:
“You sustain my family.”
“You sustain my future.”
“You sustain my health.”
Make the promise relational.
Step 3: Turn Anxiety into Prayer
Write directly to Him:
Name your concern.
Surrender the outcome.
Ask for calm.
Ask for renewed trust.
End with gratitude:
“Thank You for sustaining me.”
Prayer is not about solving every problem.
It is about transferring the weight.
Step 4: Practice Rest Physically
Tonight:
Pray before sleep.
Put your phone down earlier.
Speak Psalm 3:5 aloud.
Breathe slowly and repeat, “You sustain me.”
Spiritual trust often affects physical peace.
Rest becomes worship when it reflects confidence in God’s care.
Step 5: Build a Habit of Daily Release
Each morning write:
“Lord, sustain me today.”
Each evening write:
“Thank You for sustaining me.”
Simple repetition strengthens relational awareness.
How This Builds a Personal Relationship with God
If you believe God is distant, you will stay restless.
If you believe God is present and sustaining, you will gradually release control.
Rest requires trust.
Trust requires knowledge of His character.
When you practice laying down your burdens:
You admit dependence.
You acknowledge His provision.
You invite Him into your vulnerability.
Vulnerability deepens intimacy.
Psalm 3:5 teaches that peace is not manufactured.
It is received through relationship.
