Daily Devotional • Ephesians 1:4 • Chosen Before the Foundation of the World

Before the world began, God chose you in love. This devotional explores what it means to be set apart, fully known, and deeply loved—right where you are.

He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, so that we would be holy and blameless in His sight.

- Ephesians 1:4

God chose you, before He formed the earth he knew you and loved you.

Before the fall of Adam and Eve he knew you and made a way to be close to you forever...through the cross of Jesus Christ.

What was His purpose for you?

“To be holy and blameless”.

To be holy is to live a life of consecration, being set apart from others for God’s purposes.

He called us to be blameless, but knew of ourselves this was not possible.

He gave us Jesus to make our sin bow down and lose its’ power over us.

TODAY: God you created me to have a purpose and did everything it took so I can live that purpose out! I cannot bring my purpose to pass nor can I ruin it!

He predestined and lovingly planned for us to be adopted to Himself as [His own] children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the kind intention of His will. Ephesians 1:5

With Love,

It’s one thing to read that you are chosen—it’s another to let that truth reshape how you see yourself. Take a moment to slow down, sit with these words, and allow them to move from your head to your heart as you reflect.

  • What is one practical way you can live today from a place of being chosen, not striving?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “chosen before the foundation of the world” mean?

It means God’s love for you wasn’t an afterthought. Before anything existed, He already desired a relationship with you and set you apart as His own.

Does being chosen mean I have to be perfect?

No—this verse reminds us that God sees us through His love. Our identity in Him isn’t based on performance but on His grace.

How can I live like I’m chosen?

Start by renewing your thoughts. Speak truth over yourself, reject lies of unworthiness, and make choices aligned with who God says you are.

Why is identity in Christ important?

Understanding your identity anchors your confidence, shapes your decisions, and frees you from constantly seeking validation elsewhere.

Prayer

Lord, Thank You for choosing me before the world even began. It’s hard to fully grasp that kind of love, but I receive it today. Help me to walk in the truth that I am set apart, not because of anything I’ve done, but because of who You are. Quiet the voices that tell me I’m not enough, and remind me that I am already Yours. Shape my heart to live confidently in that identity. Amen.

Message from Kara Heckel, founder of Paper Sunday

I keep coming back to this verse because it shifts everything. On the days when I question my worth or feel like I’m falling short, Ephesians 1:4 reminds me that my story didn’t start with my mistakes—it started with being chosen. If you’re in a season where you’re doubting your place or your purpose, I hope this truth settles deeply into your heart: you were never an accident, never overlooked, and never unloved. You were chosen, intentionally and completely. Thank you for being here and growing in truth with us.
