“Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
- Lamentations 3:22–23
There is something special about morning. I love opening the blinds and seeing the sunlight flood the living room. All things are possible in the morning. I remember a time when I was navigating an all-encompassing situation. I couldn’t see how things would work out. I remember sitting with my pastor and his wife and crying over the pain and suffering one of my children was going through. I remember my pastor’s words, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5.
It was so simple. It was scripture in all its wisdom. I could only see the night, but joy was coming in the morning. A new beginning doesn't mean the past didn't happen—it means God isn't finished writing the story. Like the sun rising in the morning, God brings new beauty and new beginnings to our lives, even from pain.
No matter how dark the night has been, eventually the sun begins to rise. The darkness doesn't have to be defeated all at once. A little light appears on the horizon, and then a little more. And eventually, you realize the night is over.
That's one reason I love Lamentations 3. They weren't written from a place of comfort. Jeremiah was living through tremendous suffering. Jerusalem had been destroyed. God's people were grieving, losing, and devastated. And yet, in the middle of all that darkness, Jeremiah remembered something. God's mercy was still there.
“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Not every year, or season, but every single morning!
That's important because sometimes we look at our lives and think we need everything to change before we can have hope. We need the circumstances to improve, the money to come in, the relationship to be restored, or the diagnosis to change. But God!
Biblical hope begins somewhere much deeper. It begins with God's character and our hope in Him. Even when nothing around Jeremiah had changed, God had not changed. And that was enough to give him hope.
Maybe you're waking up today carrying something heavy from yesterday. It could be fear, disappointment, a mistake, or sin you wish you could undo. But here is the beautiful thing about morning: yesterday doesn’t get a say in what God can do today because God’s mercies are new every morning.
So if you're standing at the beginning of another morning wondering whether things can ever be different, remember this: The sun is rising, and God is still faithful. His mercy is already waiting for you when you wake each day.
Prayer: Jesus, it is so hard to have hope when I am hurting, let alone joy. But because of who You are, I can trust that joy is going to come in the morning. Thank You that my past does not have the power to determine my future and help me release yesterday and receive the grace You have given me for today. Give me hope for what You are doing, even when I cannot see it yet. Amen.
With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
A new morning doesn't mean every circumstance has changed overnight. But it does mean we get another opportunity to remember who God is.
His mercy meets us here. His faithfulness is already ahead of us. And we don't have to carry yesterday into today as though it has the final word.
Before you rush into everything this day requires, take a few quiet moments to pause with God. Let your journal become a place where you release what you're carrying, remember where He has been faithful, and make room for the hope He is offering you today.
Journal & Reflect
- What are you carrying into today that you need to surrender to God?
- Where have you experienced God's compassion or faithfulness recently?
- What does it mean to you that God's mercies are new every morning?

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that Your mercy meets me again this morning. Thank You that Your love never runs out and Your faithfulness never changes.
Help me release yesterday and receive the grace You have for me today. When I feel discouraged or uncertain about what is ahead, remind me that I don't have to know everything. I only need to trust You with this moment.
Give me eyes to recognize Your goodness, a heart willing to hope again, and the courage to walk into this new day knowing You are with me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen
Message from Kara
There is something so comforting about waking up and remembering that God gives us new mercy for a new day.
We don't have to have yesterday figured out before we can move forward. We don't have to know everything today will hold. We can simply begin again, knowing that God's compassion hasn't run out and His faithfulness is already waiting for us.
My prayer is that this devotional gives you permission to let go of yesterday, receive God's grace for today, and step into your morning with hope.
With love ,
Kara 🤍

Oh how my heart needed this devotional today. The doctor diagnosed me with cancer 7 1/2 years ago for the second time and I’m tired of the side effects from the medicine. It makes me tired and not able to do what I want to do & I want my health back.
God told me He would carry me on this journey but I have to keep witnessing to my doctor who is Muslim.
Thank you for your devotions and encouragement. Weeping is in the evenings BUT JOY COMES IN THE MORNING!
Praise God.
