Woman tossing fall leaves into the wind

Philippians 3:14 reminds us to press on toward what God has called us to. Sometimes that means letting go of what is behind so we can move forward in faith.

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

- Philippians 3:14

Fall reminds us that some things are meant to fall away: leaves, dead branches, and the things the tree no longer needs.

Sometimes our lives need the same kind of pruning. We need to release habits like bitterness, pride, comparison, fear, and old patterns. I often think of this as I prune dead leaves and flowers from my plants. I can always tell when my potted plants start to droop or not bloom that they need the dead foliage removed and new potting soil added. Within days, everything is refreshed-looking, and before you know it, new flowers are blooming on each plant.

Some things may not be sinful, but they may simply no longer belong in the season God is leading us into. The question isn't always, "Is this bad?" Sometimes the better question is: "Is this helping me become who God is calling me to be?"

A tree doesn't hold onto every leaf simply because it once needed it. It lets go. Maybe there is something you've been carrying because it was useful in an earlier season. But now it's weighing you down.

God may be asking you to release it. Let it fall. Trust Him. The life of a believer is hard. It requires us to give up whatever endangers our relationship with God. To run effectively, we must keep our eyes on Jesus. Paul tells us to pursue Christlikeness – meaning to seek maturity and completion in Him.

Is there anything that you need to let go of to be more like Jesus? Or is there something God is calling you to do to grow to be more like Him?

Prayer: Lord, show me what is weighing me down. Give me courage to release what no longer belongs in my life. Prune me with grace and help me make room for what You want to grow.  Amen.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd

If you feel stuck between what was and what is ahead, take heart: God is not asking you to carry everything into the next season. Sometimes moving forward means allowing certain things to fall away — old fears, old patterns, old expectations, or even old identities that no longer serve who He is calling you to become.

Paul’s words in Philippians 3:14 remind us that the Christian life is not about clinging to what is behind, but pressing on toward the goal in Christ. Ask the Lord to show you what needs to fall so you can run freely toward what He has prepared.

Take a few quiet moments to breathe, pray, and reflect. Use the prompts below to listen for what God may be inviting you to release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Philippians 3:14 mean?

Philippians 3:14 reminds believers to press on toward the goal of knowing Christ and living faithfully in His calling. It encourages forward movement instead of being stuck in the past.

What does it mean to let something “fall” spiritually?

It can mean releasing anything that weighs you down, distracts you, or keeps you from walking closely with God — including fear, pride, comparison, or unfinished grief.

Why is it hard to let go of the past?

The past can feel familiar, even when it is painful. Letting go often requires grief, trust, and the courage to believe God has something better ahead.

How do I know what God is asking me to release?

Bring that question honestly before Him in prayer. God often reveals what needs to fall through conviction, clarity, peace, or repeated burdens that no longer belong in your life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling me forward in faith. Help me release what is behind and trust You with what is ahead. Show me what needs to fall so that I can run with freedom, clarity, and purpose. Give me courage to let go of anything that keeps me from pressing on toward You. Fix my eyes on Christ and strengthen my heart for the road before me.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Message from Kara

I know letting go can feel uncomfortable, even painful. We often hold on to what is familiar because it feels safer than stepping into what we cannot yet see. But I’ve learned that sometimes God’s kindness looks like helping us release what we no longer need so we can receive what He has for us next.

My prayer for you is that you would have the courage to ask, “Lord, what needs to fall?” and the faith to trust His answer. You are not losing what matters when you surrender to God — you are making room for what He is building in you.

With Love,
Kara
