“Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us.”
- Hebrews 12:1
My oldest son decided to run a 100-mile race. He trained for months. Early mornings and long runs worked into already busy days became a normal part of his training. When the day of the race came, he was ready. It took him 28 hours and 43 minutes to finish, but he finished! He successfully ran 100 miles.
There is something beautiful about running in the fall. The air is cooler. The leaves are changing. The path seems a little different than it did a few months ago. And somehow, the changing season can make an ordinary run feel like an invitation to keep going. However, when my son ran his race, it was August, in Missouri. It was dry and hot. The ground was brown because the heat had killed everything.
Our faith can feel a lot like running. Some seasons feel easy. We have energy, clarity, and excitement about where God is leading us. Other seasons feel harder. The path seems longer, our strength begins to fade, and we wonder how much farther we have to go or if we can keep going.
When it became too difficult to run, and my son’s legs grew heavy, he used walking poles to help propel him forward. Others ran alongside him to support and encourage him. He took ten-minute power naps and ate.
Hebrews doesn't tell us to run the fastest race. It tells us to run with endurance. Endurance means continuing when the excitement wears off. It means taking another step when you don't feel like you have much left. It means trusting God when you can't see the finish line. It means continuing when everything in your body is screaming at you to quit and give up.
Fall gives us a beautiful picture of this.
There are seasons in our lives when endurance may look less like running and more like simply continuing to walk, to keep praying, trusting, and showing up. It might be the choice to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
You may not feel strong, but God never asked you to run the race in your own strength. He asks you to keep your eyes on Him. Sometimes we become discouraged because we are looking at how far we still have to go instead of how far God has already brought us.
Look back for a moment. You've survived things you once thought would break you. You've walked through seasons you weren't sure you'd make it through. You've experienced God's faithfulness in ways you may not have recognized then. And you're still here moving forward.
Maybe you're in a fall season right now—a season of change, letting go, or uncertainty. Don't mistake the changing landscape for the end of the race. When my son started his race, the sun was coming up. When he finished, it was early morning the next day. He ran through the night. It was as much a mental achievement as it was a physical one.
A change in season doesn't mean you've been left behind. It simply means the path looks different. So keep running. And when you can't run, walk. When you can't walk, take one step. And when even one step feels difficult, hold onto Jesus and let Him carry you.
The goal isn't to finish quickly. The goal is to finish faithfully.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being with us during the race. Sometimes it is hard and dark, and we want to quit. But you give us the endurance we need to finish the race. When I am tired, strengthen me. When I am discouraged, remind me how far You have already brought me. Help me release what I need to let go of and trust You with every changing season. Keep my eyes fixed on You and give me the courage to keep going, one step at a time. Amen.

Sherry Shepherd
If you feel tired, distracted, or tempted to slow down in your faith, remember this: you do not have to run in your own strength. God is with you in every step, and His grace is enough for the road ahead.
Hebrews 12:1 invites us to lay aside what weighs us down and keep moving forward with perseverance. The race may be long, but you are not running alone. Jesus is both your example and your strength.

Endurance helps us stay faithful through challenges, waiting seasons, and discouragement. It reminds us that growth often happens over time, not all at once.
What does it mean to “lay aside every weight”?
It means releasing anything that slows our walk with God — whether it’s sin, worry, distraction, comparison, or discouragement.
How can I keep going when I feel tired?

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that I do not have to run this race alone. When I feel weary or distracted, help me lay aside what weighs me down and fix my eyes on Jesus. Give me strength for each step, grace for the hard moments, and endurance to keep going in faith. Teach me to trust You through every part of the journey.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
