Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
- Luke 15:4
Have you ever felt forgotten by friends, family, or even God? Sometimes, during seasons of tests and difficulties, we may feel like no one cares. We may even doubt God’s goodness and love towards us. Yet, Jesus tells a different story. The Good Shepherd does not ignore the one who wanders. He actively seeks, pursues, and rescues those who are lost. His heart is drawn toward those who feel distant and alone.
If you’ve ever watched an injured animal, you’ll notice it can react with aggression or fear, even when help is being offered. In its pain and confusion, it doesn’t recognize care, it only senses a threat. Sometimes in life, we behave like a wounded animal, pushing those who love us, including God away. However, He is not the one causing us pain. We live in a very sinful and fallen world that required His Son’s very life and sacrifice for redemption and reconciliation.
How much must God love each of us to send His one and only Son as payment for our sins so that we could have restoration of relationship with Him. His pursuit of us is not passive. It is active and required the death and resurrection of His only Son.
God moves toward us with love and compassion. Even when we cannot sense His presence, He is working to draw us near. The Shepherd knows every fear, every wound, and every lonely thought. You are not a forgotten face in a crowd. You are a beloved child whom God continually pursues with relentless grace. As His child, you are His heir. Shepherds by nature are prepared to fight off predators for their sheep. They will look for the lost one and guide them to safety and surety. Likewise, our heavenly Shepherd gives us His Word and prayer to keep us close to Him and guide us through this life.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the Shepherd who never stops pursuing me. When I feel forgotten or distant, remind me that You know exactly where I am. Draw me close to Your heart and help me rest in Your unfailing love. Amen.
With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
God's pursuit isn't just something to admire—it's something to personally receive. Before you rush into the rest of your day, spend a few quiet moments writing about where you've experienced His pursuit. Journaling helps us recognize His faithfulness, remember His presence, and respond with gratitude.
Journal & Reflect
- Where have you seen God gently pursuing your heart during this season?
- Is there an area where you've been hiding, drifting, or trying to handle things on your own?
- What would it look like to fully trust the Shepherd instead of relying on yourself?
