Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourselves.

We can accept that God forgives us. We can tell other people that grace is real. But when we look in the mirror, we remember everything we’ve done wrong — the mistakes, the failures, the relationships, the words, the repeated choices, the sin.

Before we know it, we let our past become our identity.

But Scripture says something completely different. If you are in Christ, you are a new creation. The old has gone, and the new has come.

One image that has always made this truth feel so beautiful to me is the butterfly. It begins as something so ordinary, so hidden, so earthbound. And in time, it becomes something new — something made to rise and to fly.

That is the walk of a believer.

Before Christ, we are lost in our sin. But when we accept Him, He redeems our lives from the pit and reaches down into the muck to restore us to Him. He gives us purpose, belonging, and the ability to soar in His grace.

We are not a slightly improved version of our old selves.

We are completely new.

God does not introduce you by your worst mistake. He calls you His child.

The enemy wants you to keep rehearsing your past because shame keeps you looking backward, feeling insecure, and living in old patterns. But God invites you to look forward.

Your past may be part of your story, but it is not your name.

Isaiah 43:1 says, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.”

What a tender reminder that you belong to Him.

Peter was not simply the man who denied Jesus — he was the man Jesus used to help lead the early church. Paul was not simply the man who persecuted Christians — he became one of Christianity’s greatest missionaries.

God is in the business of turning our past into His victories.

Your past can explain where you’ve been without determining where you’re going.

You can let go of old labels and replace them with truths that breathe life into your soul:

Psalm 46:5 reminds us that God is within you.
Proverbs 3:15 tells us you are more precious than jewels.
Isaiah 43:4 says you are precious in God’s eyes, honored, and loved.

As you begin your day today, ask yourself: what would change if I truly embraced my identity in Christ?

Remember, God sees you through the lens of grace because the blood of His Son, Jesus, has paid for every wrong thing you have ever done.

Jesus tells us to go and sin no more. What an incredible gift.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for making me new. Help me stop defining myself by my past and start seeing myself the way You see me. Thank You for grace that gives me a new identity and a new beginning in and through You. Amen.
