Daily Devotional • 2 Timothy 1:7 • Letting Change Refine, Not Harden You

Change has a way of exposing what's in our hearts. While fear can make us resistant or bitter, God's Spirit gently shapes us with power, love, and self-control. Today's devotional reminds us that every season of change is an opportunity to become more like Christ rather than harder from life's disappointments.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

- 2 Timothy 1:7

When you hear the word discipline, do you feel your body stiffen? One of our biggest mistakes is failing to do those things that we don’t “feel” like doing but need to do.

So often, we let our feelings dictate our actions. We think motivation should keep us on the path of doing what we should. But the truth is discipline should not be solely based on motivation.

Trials can soften us—or harden us. Pain, disappointment, and uncertainty have the power to either deepen compassion or build walls. Romans 5:3–4 reminds us that suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope. God desires that change refines us, not hardens us. True discipline requires us to put aside self and do what we need to anyway. Because the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

When change wounds us, our instinct may be to protect ourselves by withdrawing, becoming guarded, or growing cynical. But God invites us to remain open. Open to healing. Open to learning. Open to love. Refinement requires vulnerability, and vulnerability requires trust.

Reflection helps us notice how change is shaping our hearts. Ask yourself: Am I becoming more guarded or more compassionate? More fearful or more trusting?” More selfish or selfless?” These questions reveal where God is inviting healing.

Refinement is a process. God gently reshapes us over time, smoothing rough edges and strengthening our inner life. When we allow Him to work, even painful change becomes a tool for growth rather than bitterness.

This doesn’t mean we ignore pain. It means allowing God to meet us in it. As we trust Him, our hearts remain tender, hopeful, and receptive to His work. We become more like Him and reflect His character.

Prayer: Jesus, protect my heart during seasons of change. Help me remain gentle in spirit, teachable, and open to Your work. Refine me through this growth and help shape me into someone who reflects Your love and grace. Amen.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
