“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

- Ecclesiastes 3:11

Have you ever noticed that fall doesn't try to look like summer? The leaves don't stay green. The days become shorter, and the temperatures change. It’s a brand-new season with new things attached to it, from cooler temperatures to decorations and food. Everything is different.

I’m always ready for summer, a good book, and time by the pool. But as August in Texas approaches, I grow weary of the rising heat. Temperatures above 100 make it hard to want to be outside. I get excited for fall and all that it entails.

As the weather cools, it’s as if God takes His paintbrush and transforms the landscape into a beautiful new masterpiece. Summer greens give way to brilliant reds, oranges, and golds, reminding us that beauty exists even in change.

Fall reminds us that change doesn't have to mean losing beauty. Sometimes we resist change because we think the best parts of our lives are behind us. We look at what we used to be able to do, or who we knew, or where we lived, and we attach meaning to that instead of to who we are in Christ. One thing we know for sure is that change is inevitable. Dreams and families change. What we once considered beautiful might look different over time. Sometimes I long for when my kids were young and all living at home. That was when I was still married and had a home. However, while I live in an apartment now and am single, I also have four grandchildren, good friends, and opportunities to use my gifts.

It is easy to focus on what we don’t have. But what if we are looking for yesterday's beauty instead of noticing today's? God doesn't make every season look the same. He makes each one beautiful in its own way. Beauty exists in summer, but it exists in fall too. There is beauty in youth, and in growing older. There is beauty in seasons of abundance and in seasons of simplicity. But isn’t that what Solomon was telling us?

If you're in a season that looks different than you expected, don't assume it is less beautiful. Ask God to show you the beauty that belongs specifically to this season, because He has made everything beautiful in its time.

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the beauty of the season I'm in. Keep me from constantly longing for what was or rushing toward what will be. Help me recognize what You are doing right now. Amen.

With Love,
Sarah Sherstad

If change has felt unsettling lately, take heart: God has not lost control of your story. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us that He makes everything beautiful in its time, even the parts we do not yet understand.

There are seasons when beauty looks like surrender, patience, or simply trusting that God is working behind the scenes. The changing may feel tender, but it is not wasted. The Lord is able to bring meaning, growth, and grace to every part of your story.

Take a few quiet moments to breathe, pray, and reflect. Use the journaling prompts below to process what is shifting and to invite God into the places where you need peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Ecclesiastes 3:11 mean?

Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us that God makes everything beautiful in its time. Even when life feels confusing or unfinished, He is still working with purpose.

Why is change so hard sometimes?

Change can feel hard because it often involves grief, uncertainty, and letting go of what was familiar. Even good change can be emotionally difficult.

How can I trust God when I can’t see the beauty yet?

Trust grows as we remember God’s character. He is faithful, wise, and present in every season, even when the outcome is still unfolding.

What should I do when I feel anxious about change?

Bring your anxiety to God honestly. Pray, journal, and ask Him for peace for today rather than trying to solve the entire future at once.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are the One who makes all things beautiful in Your time. When change feels hard or uncertain, help me trust that You are still working. Give me peace in the waiting, courage in the transition, and faith to believe that nothing is wasted in Your hands. Teach me to rest in Your timing and to look for Your beauty in every season.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
