Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”
- Exodus 16:4–5
The Israelites found themselves in the wilderness with no obvious source of food. They had left Egypt, but they hadn't yet reached the Promised Land. They were caught somewhere in between. Have you ever been caught in the in-between? You don’t have the green light to move, or the red light to stay. You don’t know where you are supposed to be or where to go. Are you in a perpetual holding pattern?
Don’t give up. God will provide for you in the desert. When the Israelites were in the desert wilderness, God provided manna. He didn't give them enough for the rest of their lives. He gave them what they needed for each day. I am a planner. I want the whole story spelled out ahead of me. I want to know the why, when, where, how, and what. But so often, life is messy. We want to know how everything will work out and have tomorrow's provision today, but we often don’t get that. So when we ask for the entire path mapped out and don't get it, we can trust God in life's messiness.
We can trust God for enough grace for today, when we don’t get the whole plan. Today, can you give God what is holding you hostage to your thoughts? Ask Him to provide enough strength and faith for today. If you're walking through a barren season, don't overlook the daily bread God is already providing. His faithfulness may not always look like abundance. Sometimes it looks like exactly enough.
And exactly enough from God is still evidence that He has not forgotten you.
Prayer: Father, thank You for providing what I need each day. When I worry about tomorrow, help me trust You with today. Teach me to recognize Your faithfulness in the small provisions around me and cultivate a grateful heart. Amen.
With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
It is natural to want the whole path mapped out before taking the next step. But in the wilderness, God taught His people to receive what they needed one day at a time.
Use the prompts below to release tomorrow into His care, recognize today’s provision, and reflect on the grace already meeting you where you are.
Journal & Reflect
Exodus 16:4–5 describes the Israelites in the wilderness—between the place they had left and the Promised Land they had not yet reached. God provided manna, but He gave them enough for each day rather than the entire journey at once.
We often want the whole plan: the answers, timing, direction, and provision for tomorrow. But God invites us to trust Him with today’s needs. His faithfulness may not always look like abundance. Sometimes it looks like exactly enough grace for the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Exodus 16:4–5 mean?
Exodus 16:4–5 describes how God provided manna for the Israelites in the wilderness. He gave them what they needed for each day, teaching them to trust His provision and follow His instructions.
What does manna teach us about God’s provision?
Manna reminds us that God is attentive to our needs and faithful to provide. His provision may not always come in the form or amount we expect, but He gives us what we need for the present step.
Why did God provide manna one day at a time?
Daily provision taught the Israelites dependence and trust. They could not store up certainty for every future circumstance; they had to receive God’s provision day by day.
What does it mean to trust God with today?
Trusting God with today means focusing on the grace, wisdom, and strength He is providing now rather than demanding answers about everything ahead. It does not mean ignoring responsible planning—it means releasing the illusion of total control.
How can I trust God when I feel stuck in the in-between?
Acknowledge your uncertainty, bring it honestly to God, and focus on the next faithful step. Look for the provision already present, seek wise counsel, and remember that a waiting season is not a wasted season.
What if I am worried about tomorrow?
God understands your concerns. Bring tomorrow’s fears to Him, then return your attention to what is in front of you today. Scripture, prayer, gratitude, and supportive community can help you remain grounded in the present.
How can journaling help me recognize God’s provision?
Journaling helps you name your needs, record your prayers, and notice the people, opportunities, strength, and small graces God provides. Over time, these entries can become a record of His faithfulness.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for providing what I need each day. When I want the whole plan or worry about what tomorrow may bring, help me trust You with today.
Teach me to recognize the small provisions, quiet strength, and daily mercies You place in my path. Give me grace for this moment, wisdom for the next step, and faith to believe that You have not forgotten me.
Help me release the future into Your hands and cultivate gratitude for what You are providing now.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Message from Kara
If you are in an in-between season, you may feel pressure to know exactly what comes next. But God does not ask you to carry tomorrow’s uncertainty with today’s strength.
Look for the grace already in front of you—the breath, strength, support, provision, or small reminder that you are not alone. It may not feel like abundance, but exactly enough from God is still evidence of His faithfulness.
With Love,
Kara
