“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
- Luke 15:4–7
Jesus told a story about a shepherd who had one sheep wander away. The shepherd didn't simply shrug and say, "I still have ninety-nine." He went looking for the little lost sheep. That is the heart of God. When we feel lost, forgotten, or distant, God isn't standing at a distance waiting for us to figure everything out. He is the Shepherd who pursues.
There are lonely places that can convince us that nobody would notice if we disappeared. But heaven notices. God notices. You matter to Him. What is so beautiful when we look at our life in Christ is that, more often than not, when we are in the darkness, we don’t see what God is doing. After we come out of the dark place and move into a different season, we often see the purpose of that difficult season. We may have learned something we needed for the new job we are going to do for Him. It could be a heart change to prepare us for our next adventure. But always, it is Him moving in our lives for our good.
The Shepherd knows exactly which sheep is missing. He knows where you are. He knows how you got there. And He is not indifferent to your wandering. You may feel far from God, but distance does not cancel His pursuit. The God who seeks the lost is still seeking you. His heart wants you to draw near to Him. He desires your trust and a relationship because His love for you far outweighs anything else on earth that we could ever experience.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the Shepherd who pursues me. When I feel lost or forgotten, remind me that You know exactly where I am. Help me recognize Your voice and follow You home. Amen.
With Love,
Sherry Shepherd

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Luke 15:4–7 mean?
Luke 15:4–7 describes a shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine sheep to search for one that is lost. Jesus uses this story to show the value God places on every person and the joy He has when the lost are found.
What does the lost sheep represent?
The lost sheep represents a person who has wandered, feels distant, or is in need of being found and restored. The parable emphasizes God’s compassionate pursuit rather than shame or rejection.
Does God really notice when I feel lost?
Yes. The parable shows that God knows when one sheep is missing. Your life is not overlooked, and your struggles do not make you invisible to Him.
What does it mean that the Shepherd carries the sheep?
The shepherd’s actions picture God’s care, strength, and willingness to restore us. We do not have to find our way back through our own strength. Jesus meets us and helps carry us toward safety and renewal.
What if I feel too far from God to return?
You are never beyond God’s reach. You can begin with a simple, honest prayer. God does not require perfect words or a complete understanding before you draw near.
Does being found mean I will never struggle again?
No. Following Jesus does not remove every difficulty or temptation. It does mean that you are not abandoned in your struggles. The Shepherd continues to guide, correct, protect, and care for you.
How can journaling help when I feel lost?
Journaling can help you name where you are, process what has happened, and bring your questions honestly to God. It can also help you notice His care and recognize the next faithful step.
