There are seasons when you don't have the strength to carry yourself. You can only hype yourself so much. Some days it may feel impossible to encourage yourself to keep on keeping on. You can tell yourself to keep going, but eventually exhaustion catches up.
That is when God's promise becomes especially precious: "I am with you." Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't say, "You are strong enough, or you can handle this all by yourself."
He says, "I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you." Sometimes faith looks less like standing strong and more like allowing God to hold you. I love this verse because it allows us to be real with the Lord. We don't have to pretend we're okay. You don't have to carry tomorrow today. You can lean into the everlasting arms of a God who is stronger than your weakness.
When you are most exhausted, sometimes the thing that helps the most is rest and a meal. You would be surprised what a nap and something to eat can do for your mood when you are worn out.
In 1 Kings 19:5-7, Elijah is exhausted, depressed, and afraid. He laid down under a tree and fell asleep. Later, an angel wakes him up and has hot bread on a stone for him to eat and water to drink. After Eijah eats, the angel tells him to rest again. Elijah does and then the angel wakes him later to eat again. God knows our humanness and our need for rest and nourishment. Maybe today you need to take a nap and eat something, so you are better prepared to handle the journey ahead.
Prayer: Lord, I am tired. Thank You that I don't have to carry everything myself. Strengthen me where I am weak, hold me when I cannot stand, and remind me that Your presence is enough. Amen.
