I am the vine: you, are the branches. If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.
- John 15:5
I will never forget one summer when my youngest and I planted a garden. We had blackberries, tomatoes, squash, and all sorts of peppers.
We were so excited to pick the vegetables we had grown.
However, as it neared the end of summer, the August heat in Texas began taking its toll.
The ground became hard and cracked, requiring constant watering. As a result, some of the plants slowed in production.
Then, when we left for a week for vacation and returned home, they had all died out, except for a tiny tomato hanging on for dear life to a plant that had all but withered and died.
It struck me as such a brilliant example of our lives in Christ.
Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
Harsh conditions stunt our growth, causing us to wither and die. But in Him, as we cling to Him, firmly planted in His Word and ways, we will bear fruit.
Not only that, but as the branches of Christ, we belong to Him, our vine. Being rooted in Him means our lives are His. We will be with Him here and in eternity!
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for reminding me today that apart from you, I can do nothing. You are the vine that provides me the nutrients I need to live for You. Thank you for this beautiful reminder today. Amen.
With Love,
Sherry Shepherd
