“Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
- Mark 6:31
Jesus understood the need for rest. His disciples had been busy serving, teaching, and ministering. Jesus didn't tell them to work harder. He told them to come away and rest. Fall seems to whisper the same invitation. Even though school is in full swing and football season is going, something about the temperatures and evenings changing feels different. It gets darker earlier, and despite routines, fall feels like a time to slow down a bit. I love all things fall, from baking to decorations. I love Sunday football after church and high school Friday night lights. It’s just a fun season.
And the wonderful thing about rest is that it can be something we enjoy that is life-giving. It doesn’t have to be sleeping or sitting. It can be taking time to slow down and breathe, take a break from work and stress.
We've become accustomed to living at a pace that leaves little room for reflection. But sometimes the soul needs quiet. We need time to hear our own thoughts and God’s voice. That might be taking time to sit outside and drink a cup of coffee. It could be going for a long walk, creating something beautiful, or listening to praise and worship music. Rest isn't simply stopping work. It's creating space for God.
That may be why some of the most beautiful fall moments are quiet ones. You don't always need to accomplish something. Sometimes you need to be and remember what gives you life and feeds your soul.
Today as you begin your day, ask yourself what keeps you from slowing down. When was the last time you truly rested, and how can you create more space for God?
Prayer: Jesus, teach me to slow down. Help me resist the pressure to constantly produce and give me the wisdom to recognize when my soul needs rest. Meet me in the quiet. Amen.

Jesus understood that His disciples needed more than another task to complete. They needed rest. In Mark 6:31, He invites them to step away from the demands around them and spend time with Him.
A slower pace is not a failure to accomplish enough. It can be an act of trust—a way of remembering that your worth is not measured by your productivity and that God is still at work when you pause.
Journal & Reflect

- Where am I feeling hurried, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin?

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Mark 6:31 mean?
Mark 6:31 shows Jesus recognizing the disciples’ need for rest and inviting them to a quiet place. It reminds us that rest is not separate from spiritual life—it is part of caring for the bodies, minds, and souls God has given us.
Is slowing down a biblical practice?
Yes. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s people encouraged to pause, rest, be still, and abide with Him. Slowing down can create space to listen, pray, recover, and remember that our identity is not based on productivity.
Why is it so difficult to rest?
Rest can feel difficult when we are carrying responsibilities, expectations, anxiety, or the belief that we must always be accomplishing something. We may also fear falling behind. Jesus gently invites us to trust Him with the work we cannot complete today.
How can I practice a slower pace in a busy season?
Begin with one small, intentional change. Set aside a few quiet minutes without your phone, take a prayerful walk, eat a meal without multitasking, or create a simple evening rhythm that allows you to be present with God.
Does rest mean neglecting my responsibilities?
No. Biblical rest is not about avoiding every responsibility. It is about receiving healthy limits and recognizing that you are not meant to carry everything without pause. Rest can help you return to your responsibilities with greater wisdom and strength.
What can I journal about when I feel overwhelmed?
Start by naming what feels heavy. Then write what is within your control, what you need to release to God, and one peaceful next step. You do not have to solve everything in one journaling session.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for seeing when I am tired, overwhelmed, or carrying more than I was meant to hold. Help me receive Your invitation to slow down and rest with You.
Quiet the noise within me and remind me that my worth does not depend on how much I accomplish. Give me wisdom to recognize what I need to release and courage to create space for renewal.
Teach me to trust that You are still working when I pause. Help me walk at a pace that allows me to notice Your presence, receive Your peace, and care well for the life You have given me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Message from Kara
If life has felt especially full lately, I hope this devotional gives you permission to pause. You do not have to earn rest, and you do not have to keep moving in order to prove that you are faithful.
Jesus cares about your work, but He also cares about your weariness. I pray you find a little more room to breathe, listen, and simply be with Him today. Even a small step toward a slower pace can become a beautiful reminder that you are held by God.
With Love,
Kara
