“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.”
- Romans 15:13
We often talk about hope as though it is a feeling. "I hope things get better." "I hope tomorrow is different." "I hope this works out."
But biblical hope is different. Biblical hope isn't wishful thinking. It is confidence in the character of God. And Paul doesn't simply say God gives hope. He calls Him the God of hope. Hope has a source. And His name is Jesus. That matters because circumstances, people, and plans all change. Even our emotions change.
But God doesn't. When our hope is anchored in Him, we can have joy and peace even when life is difficult, and we don’t have the answers we are seeking. Hope in Christ gives us peaceful confidence when the future is uncertain because God is certain. We can lean on who He is. That doesn’t mean we pretend everything is okay, but rather that we trust that, whatever the outcome, He will walk through it with us. It’s believing God is still good even when everything isn’t.
Maybe your hope has been tied to a particular outcome, job, healing, or person. As someone dealing with permanent nerve damage, there are days I truly don’t want even to try to get out of bed. I want healing so desperately, and yet God has not chosen to do so. But I still have hope because I know He has a purpose for my life. Recently, I had been looking for a new surgeon. I had seen several and didn’t know who to trust or whose advice was correct. So, I prayed a somewhat silly prayer. “God, if I am on the right track with my medical decisions, please let a little bunny come up on my porch today.” I live in an apartment, so bunnies are around, but you don’t see them very often. Within minutes of praying that, a bunny hopped up on my porch and sat on the rug outside my door.
God doesn’t usually answer me like this. But for some reason, He chose to do that that day. It has given me hope that, even if the outcome I want doesn't happen, God sees me.
It’s so easy, when we are hurting and don’t get the answers we want, for our hope to disappear. But what if your hope could be bigger than the outcome?
What if you could say: "God, I trust You even if the answer looks different than I wanted." That's unshakable hope. Because you're not trusting an outcome. You're trusting the Person of God.
Prayer: God of hope, anchor my heart in You. Help me stop placing all my hope in circumstances and outcomes. Give me joy and peace as I trust You, and let my life reflect Your light to others, so that they can see You. Amen.
