Daily Devotional • Matthew 26:40 • Jesus Understands Loneliness

Loneliness has a way of making us feel unseen and misunderstood. Yet in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus experienced the pain of being alone when His closest friends couldn't stay awake with Him. If you're feeling isolated today, take heart—Jesus understands your loneliness and promises to never leave your side.

Then He returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” He asked Peter.

- Matthew 26:40

Few experiences are more painful than facing hardship and discovering that those around us cannot fully share the burden. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked His closest friends to stay awake and pray with Him. Yet in His moment of deepest anguish, they slept. Soon after, He would be betrayed, denied, abandoned and crucified. Jesus knows your pain. He experienced every single emotion, hurt and disappointment that we have and yet, we doubt Him.

Jesus understands loneliness because He experienced it firsthand. He knows what it feels like to be misunderstood, rejected, and left alone. It is so easy when we are hurting to get stuck in our heads. Satan loves to whisper lies to us when we are isolated and struggling – especially when we are at our lowest spiritually and physically. But we have a Savior who showed us how to handle those situations. He quotes scripture to Satan and He chooses to obey God.

When Satan tempted Jesus to sin, Jesus was hungry, tired and worn out. He understands us when we feel this way. We can bring our loneliness to Him because He understands our pain and desires us to draw near to Him. We are speaking to a Savior who has walked through it Himself.

Because Jesus endured loneliness, He comforts us in ours. He meets us with compassion rather than judgment. He understands our tears, our questions, and our longing for connection. In every lonely moment, we can find comfort in knowing that Christ truly understands and provides a way out of every temptation we face in our weakness.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for understanding my loneliness. Thank You for walking through suffering and abandonment so that I could know Your comfort. When I feel alone, remind me that You are near and that You understand exactly what I am facing. Help me find strength in Your presence today. Amen.

With Love,
Sherry Shepherd

Message from Kara

Loneliness can quietly convince us that no one understands what we're carrying. But one of the truths that has brought me the most comfort is remembering that Jesus experienced loneliness too. He knows what it feels like to long for companionship, to grieve, and to carry heavy burdens.

If today feels especially lonely, I hope you'll remember this: Jesus isn't distant from your pain—He's present in it. He sees you, walks beside you, and lovingly reminds you that you never have to face life's hardest moments alone.

With love ,
Kara 🤍
