“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” Those words don't sound like the prayer of someone with perfect faith. And that's exactly why Psalm 13 is so comforting. David was honest with God, which is one reason I love the Psalms so much. David writes with the honesty and humanity we all live in. He didn't hide his frustration or pretend everything was okay. Instead, he asked God where He was.
Sometimes, when our prayers feel unanswered, we may doubt God’s presence. We pray, hear silence, and struggle to understand why nothing changes. Days can go by, one just like the other. We may lack the motivation to do the simplest of things, like shower, clean, or make a meal. But it will not last. In fact, the Bible promises to restore the years the locusts have eaten. (Joel 2:25) And in Psalm 30: 5, Scripture tells us that weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
So when we ask for relief and answers and don't understand why nothing changes, we can still have hope because we can bank on the Bible's promises. Faithfulness doesn't mean asking questions. It means continuing to turn toward God even when we don't have answers. Notice how David's prayer changes. He begins with “How long?” but ends by declaring that he will trust in God's unfailing love. How many times after a long prayer and crying out to God for answers, have I found myself surrendering to His good and perfect will, even if I don’t understand it?
The circumstances hadn't necessarily changed. But, like David, I remembered who God was. You can be honest with God about your silence while still choosing to trust His heart.
Prayer: God, I don't always understand Your silence. Help me bring my honest questions to You without walking away. When I cannot see Your hand, help me trust who Your Word tells me You are, my good and loving Father. Amen.
