LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure…I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
- Psalm 16:5, 8
Are you more of a cup half empty or a cup half full type of person?
Pessimist vs Optimist is the divine question, isn’t it?
This is like some formal standard used by others to judge you for your moral code and overall outlook.
I am with you in the sense that we know that as followers of Jesus there is an expectation to constantly approach life with a ‘too blessed to be stressed’ attitude.
I am here to testify that is most definitely not the way that I have felt during certain times in my life.
So what does God say to the toxic positivity and the ‘Debbie downers’?
He says in Psalm 16:5, ‘You cannot separate the cup that overflows from the hand that pours’
Cups break.
But God has more cups in the cupboard. When your cup breaks, God is able to give you another cup.
If you know and trust the hand that pours into our cup, you can sing, “My cup overflows,” no matter the circumstances.
Whether you are the half empty crowd or the half full, it is God alone who fills your cup, who fills you up.
You are refillable.
We need only to seek Him in the midst of our chaos and struggles, and He is willing and able to refill our cups.
There are several metaphoric ways in which the term ‘cup’ is used in the bible- in the coming weeks I will share more of what God has in the imagery and the work of his wording. On your own- look up verses where a cup is mentioned and journal your own thoughts for this.
