Daily Devotional • Nehemiah 8:10 • Finding Strength in the Joy of the Lord

Some days leave us feeling emotionally, mentally, and spiritually drained. Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that our strength doesn't have to come from ourselves. God's joy is a steady source of hope and endurance, even in difficult seasons. When we rest in His presence, we discover a strength that circumstances cannot take away.

Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

- Nehemiah 8:10

Happiness is something that is often preached by the world. That in order to maintain happiness in every moment, we must simply focus on pleasing ourselves.

However, happiness is dependent on circumstances.

The joy of the Lord is not!

This is why the joy of the Lord is so powerful. It gives us strength even during tough circumstances. Just like the peace Jesus gives us is unlike the world’s version of peace, the joy of the Lord is unlike the world’s version of joy.

The joy of the Lord is something that cannot be fabricated. It is something that can only be birthed from a deep knowing and intimate relationship with Him.

When His goodness and love permeate your life so deeply, you can’t help but experience His joy all the time! By walking hand in hand with your Heavenly Father, there is no challenge that you cannot face and there is no hardship that you can’t overcome. There is a supernatural peace and sense of security in knowing Him so intimately, because you’ve experienced His love for you and His goodness.

Today, take time to seek out the Lord and come face to face with Him. Pursue Him with all your might, and His indescribable joy will overtake you, no matter the circumstances! Lift up praises to Him, sing His name and thank Him for His goodness!

Prayer: Lord, how great and wonderful is your joy that gives me strength even during difficult times. Help me to stay close to you and walk hand in hand with you. I choose your joy today.

With Love,
Sarah Sherstad

Joy isn't the absence of hardship—it's the confidence that God is present through every moment. Before moving on with your day, spend a few quiet moments reflecting on where God has been faithful and how His joy can strengthen your heart today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being my source of joy and strength. When I feel weary, discouraged, or overwhelmed, remind me that Your presence is enough. Help me lift my eyes above my circumstances and rest in the confidence that You are faithful. Fill my heart with lasting joy that comes from knowing You, and let that joy strengthen me for whatever today brings.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Message from Kara

There are seasons when joy feels easy—and others when it feels far away. I've learned that biblical joy isn't pretending everything is perfect. It's choosing to trust that God is still good, even when life is hard. Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that our strength isn't found in having all the answers. It's found in the steady joy that comes from walking with the Lord. My prayer today is that you'll pause long enough to notice His goodness, celebrate His faithfulness, and let His joy renew your heart.

Cheering you on,
Kara 🤍
